Description
Kalamkari sarees ‘Kalam’ means ‘pen’, ‘Kari’ means ‘Drawing’. Kalamkari is a type of hand block printing produced in Andhra Pradesh and some villages in Tamil Nadu in the earlier period. Now kalamkari is popular worldwide. Kalamkari is more about tradition, it’s just not a print or art it's an emotion. Kalamkari is part of Hindu mythology and Buddhist Thangka painting hence people admire this not just as an art but also as a part of culture and tradition. Kalamkari involves 23 steps, from bleaching the kalamkari fabric to softening, preparing the dye, dyeing it in sunlight to washing. All processes need a lot of effort and an eye for detail. The way it is done makes it very special. Kalamkari is done with the hand which brings out the true creativity of the artisan. Kalamkari is also known as ‘Pattachitras’ which is a Sanskrit word. ‘Patta’ means ‘Cloth’ whereas ‘Chitra’ means ‘Picture’. Kalamkari has been mentioned in ancient Hindu, Buddhist and Jain literature which makes it even more special like gold. As a saying goes ‘old is gold. For wash care, always use mild washing gel, which is used for silk and wool. Using water at a normal temperature and not rubbing the fabric. Always dry in shade to preserve the colour of the fabric. While storing, always use a box, wrap the saree in the paper for protection.
